3) to minimise the negative effects of bullying.

Write to Read

Write to Read is a literacy model which encourages children to see themselves as readers, writers and thinkers. We work with the programme creator Dr. Eithne Kennedy, Senior Lecturer in DCU. It provides support to teachers to enable them to deliver high quality literacy programmes that are all inclusive.

Maths Recovery

Many of our teachers are trained in Maths Recovery. The programme provides teaching sessions that emphasise ongoing assessment through careful observation of the students current knowledge and strategies and selecting learning activities based on this information. Dr. Noreen O’Loughlin from Mary Immaculate College supports us with this programme.

Play to Learn

The Play to Project is an important part of children’s learning in Junior and Senior Infants. Guided play enhances children’s competence in literacy. Our yearly talent show encourages creativity as it is pupil led and always a great success.

Teamwork runs throughout our Play to Learn project. The children learn the vital skills of communicating with each other towards a shared goal. Children are encouraged to learn the vital language skills to be able to share with each other and work together. Teaching children to take turns and resolve conflicts in real time is an excellent way to develop cooperation. Our children love working together as a team!

Roots of Empathy

Empathy, is a core value at Our Lady Immaculate JNS with students and staff encouraged at all times to show empathy and act in an empathetic way. Social justice and the pedagogy required to develop socially just schools is very evident at Our Lady Immaculate JNS. While meeting education needs in an innovative way, social and emotional needs are also met creatively and thoughtfully. This is a wonderful school and an excellent example of how innovative practices can improve the lives of children. The Roots of Empathy programme has been running for four years at the school and has been very beneficial to the students.
